The general government has employed Captain Shreve, with a large number of men, for several years, in removing the snags, and other similar obstructions to navigation, in the rivers of the West. For the purpose of removing the snags, (which are trees, many of them very large, sunk in the river with their tops down stream, and their roots imbedded in the mud at the bottom) he has constructed a machine which answers the purpose admirably in many respects. He has put two steamboats, constructed for this purpose, together, by means of large and strong timbers between them, from 10 to 15 feet long.
